CloudTV thunderOS: India’s “Homegrown” Smart TV OS Is Android Underneath

On 9 September 2026, CloudTV announced that its thunderOS smart TV platform is partnering with Billion and realme TechLife. The two brands are the first to carry the operating system on their televisions. The TVs are available on Flipkart starting today, ahead of the festive season. CloudTV describes itself as India’s first homegrown smart TV operating system provider.

The announcement bundles a CTS-certified OS, AI voice assistant, 350+ live channels, 130+ OTT apps, and unified content search into one platform. It sounds like a ground-up alternative to Android TV, Tizen, and webOS. It is not. The “CTS-certified” label means thunderOS runs on Android and passes Google’s Compatibility Test Suite. It is a custom Android TV layer, not an independent operating system. That distinction matters for anyone evaluating the platform.

Why CloudTV Timed This for September 2026

The festive season is the single biggest driver of smart TV sales in India. Counterpoint Research reports that India’s smart TV market was broadly flat in 2025, with a weak first half offset by festive-led demand in the second. Q4 2025 shipments grew 10% year-on-year. But the market then declined 9.8% year-on-year in Q2 2026, hit by memory shortages, price hikes, and cautious spending. Brands are under pressure to stimulate demand ahead of the festive window.

CloudTV’s own LinkedIn page confirms thunderOS was in development through August 2026. A 17 August post teased “new partners” and a “new chapter.” The 9 September announcement with Billion and realme TechLife is the reveal. The timing is a bet on festive-season visibility.

The choice of Flipkart as exclusive launch channel is not coincidental. Billion is Flipkart’s private-label electronics brand. The partnership effectively puts CloudTV’s OS on Flipkart’s own house brand, giving the platform guaranteed shelf space on one of India’s largest e-commerce platforms during peak buying season.

The Competitive Picture: thunderOS Enters a Crowded Field

India’s smart TV OS market is dominated by Android TV. Mordor Intelligence estimates Android TV held a 67.38% share of the India smart TV and OTT market in 2025. Samsung’s Tizen and LG’s webOS hold captive positions in their respective brand ecosystems. Amazon’s Fire OS maintains a niche through content bundling and retail integration. Jio launched JioTele OS in February 2025, bundling voice AI and smart-home dashboards optimised for Indic languages, backed by the government’s IndOS push.

Where thunderOS sits

CloudTV is not competing with Android TV. It is an Android TV variant. CTS certification means it passes Google’s compatibility requirements and can licence Google Mobile Services, including the Play Store. What CloudTV offers TV manufacturers is a custom Android layer with India-specific features, pre-integrated content, and a lower-cost path to market than licensing Google TV directly. For brands like Billion and realme TechLife, which compete in the value segment, that proposition has clear appeal.

The company claims it powers over 8 million devices and reaches over 16 million viewers. Its own website, however, says “6+ million users.” This discrepancy is unexplained. Either way, 6 to 8 million devices is meaningful in a market that ships 16 to 20 million smart TVs annually, but it represents the installed base of CloudTV’s previous OS, not thunderOS specifically.

What the Public Data Shows

Three external data points add context the press release does not provide.

First, the company behind CloudTV. CloudWalker Streaming Technologies was incorporated in Mumbai in July 2013. Its founders are Jagdish Rajpurohit and Sunil Ramdas Chhichhia. Abhijeet Rajpurohit, quoted in the press release as Co-founder and COO, leads operations. The company is small. Tracxn lists 38 employees as of August 2025. LinkedIn shows 21 employees with 31.2% year-on-year growth. Its paid-up capital is ₹2.31 crore, and its annual turnover is ₹5 to 25 crore, per IndiaMART. It was incubated by JioGenNext, Reliance’s startup accelerator. This is a bootstrapped company, not a venture-backed unicorn.

Second, the CTS certification claim. Google’s Android Open Source Project documentation defines the Compatibility Test Suite as a free, open-source test suite that ensures devices meet Android’s compatibility requirements. Passing CTS means a device can licence Google Mobile Services, including the Play Store, YouTube, and other Google apps. thunderOS being “CTS-certified” confirms it is Android-based. The press release does not state this directly, and the “built from the ground up” framing in Abhijeet Rajpurohit’s quote implies otherwise.

Third, the market context. Counterpoint Research reports India’s smart TV shipments fell 3% year-on-year in Q1 2026 and 9.8% in Q2 2026. Memory shortages and price hikes drove the decline. Consumers are increasingly opting for larger screens and premium technologies like QLED, with the ₹40,000 to ₹50,000 price band outperforming the broader market. thunderOS, which targets the affordable segment, is entering during a downturn.

What’s New vs. What’s Repackaged

New: The specific OEM partnerships with Billion and realme TechLife. These are the first brands to carry thunderOS. The “Bolt” AI voice assistant, which provides general trivia alongside content search, appears to be a genuinely new feature for CloudTV’s platform. DVB-S satellite connectivity support and 800+ free-to-air channels are specific to thunderOS and not standard across all Android TV variants.

Repackaged: Unified Content Search, Kids Mode, PC Mode, personalised recommendations, and Continue Watching are standard features on Android TV, Google TV, Tizen, and webOS. The press release presents them as thunderOS innovations, but they are table-stakes capabilities in 2026. The “homegrown operating system” label is also repackaged. thunderOS is a custom Android layer, not a new OS built independently.

Improved: CloudTV’s previous OS already powered millions of devices. thunderOS adds CTS certification, which its earlier versions may not have had. This means certified YouTube and Prime Video support, which matters for consumer trust and app compatibility. The AI features (Bolt voice assistant, SmartAudio) represent a genuine capability upgrade from the company’s earlier platform.

Unclear: The press release does not specify which thunderOS features require internet connectivity, what data the Bolt AI assistant collects, or how voice data is stored and processed. It also does not clarify the update and support lifecycle. How long will thunderOS devices receive software updates? Who handles after-sales support — CloudTV, the brand, or Flipkart?

The Question That Wasn’t Answered

The most important unanswered question: what happens to thunderOS users when CloudTV, a 21-person company with ₹2.31 crore in paid-up capital, cannot sustain long-term software support?

Smart TV buyers increasingly depend on OS updates for app compatibility, security patches, and feature additions. The press release does not mention a support lifecycle, update frequency, or end-of-life policy. For a company of CloudTV’s size, the risk of abandoned software is real. Buyers cannot assess this risk from the announcement.

A secondary question concerns data privacy. Bolt, the AI voice assistant, processes voice commands and provides “general trivia.” The press release does not mention how voice data is collected, stored, or shared. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, applies to voice data processing. There is no reference to compliance, data localisation, or a privacy policy.

Pricing is also absent. The press release does not disclose the TV models, screen sizes, or price points. It says only that the TVs are “available on Flipkart starting today.” Without pricing, it is impossible to assess whether thunderOS delivers a meaningful value proposition against comparable Android TV models from Xiaomi, TCL, or Samsung.

What This Means for You

If you are a smart TV buyer in the affordable segment, the OS matters less than you think. What matters is content availability, certified app support, price, and after-sales service. thunderOS, being CTS-certified, supports official YouTube and Prime Video. That is a real advantage over uncertified Android forks. But Xiaomi, TCL, and OnePlus offer Google TV or Android TV at competitive prices with larger ecosystems. Check whether the specific Billion or realme TechLife model meets your needs before choosing on OS novelty alone.

If you are a TV manufacturer or OEM, CloudTV offers a lower-cost, India-optimised Android layer with pre-integrated content and local support. That is a legitimate value proposition for value-segment brands. The trade-off is dependence on a small company for long-term OS support and updates. Evaluate CloudTV’s engineering capacity and update roadmap before committing.

For industry observers, thunderOS is a credible attempt to build an India-specific Android TV layer at a time when the market is flat and brands are looking for differentiation. But the “homegrown OS” framing oversells what the product is. It is Android, customised for India, sold through Flipkart’s house brand. That is a reasonable business. It is not a new operating system.
